Water/Wastewater Engineering

Water is enormously valuable - and we've taken it for granted for so long. As reserves of drinkable water diminish, issues concerning water supply and use have come to the forefront of our collective awareness.

Driven by clean water legislation and coupled with ever-increasing public concerns, new approaches, strategies and plans for the way we deal with water and wastewater are emerging. Decades ago the United States invested widely in water/wastewater infrastructure. Today that infrastructure must be expanded and rehabilitated. Nowhere is the need for holistic nurturing of our water resources more important than the American Southwest, where Smith is meeting this need with cutting edge solutions that are simple and dependable, solutions that reflect the value of water and the resources of the community.

Each community and business is different - their needs and uses of water vary. Over a decade ago Smith developed a specialty Water/Wastewater Group to focus on the specific water and wastewater needs for our clients. This focus has allowed us to create a wide variety of solutions for the variety of problems we've faced. We've rehabilitated water and sewer lines across Albuquerque, clarified river water in Aztec, removed arsenic from Bernalillo's water and radionuclides in Ft. Sumner, provided mega storage and pressure boosting in Deming, replaced wells in Portales and Silver City, and pumped Rio Grande water from the Buckman Diversion. We've treated wastewater with technology ranging from ponds to activated sludge and trickling filters, polished treated effluent by removing fine solids and nutrients, processed biosolids from stabilization to composting, and provided reuse to irrigation, landscaping, and industry.

From planning and conservation, to infrastructure engineering, to balancing the books with appropriate utility rates, Smith's specialty Water/Wastewater Group connects clients to water and enhances use. Visit our portfolio for detailed examples of water and wastewater projects completed by Smith.
