Transportation Engineering
Fulfilling our mission "Solutions for Today... Vision for Tomorrow," embraces two key elements with regards to Transportation Engineering: understanding our clients' needs and being experts in the field.
The Smith Engineering Transportation group is recognized throughout the state for design of primary, state, county, and municipal roadways, bridges, and traffic engineering projects. We provide alignment and drainage studies, traffic analysis, design surveys, right-of-way mapping, soil analyses, planning and concept development, public involvement programs, environmental investigations/documentation, and design.
Specific design services include:
- Major Streetscape and Landscape Improvements
- Roadway and Parking
- Drainage
- Traffic signals
- Construction and Permanent Traffic Control
- Erosion Control
- Intersection design and analysis
Not so long ago, New Mexico highway 130 near Cloudcroft was one of the most hair-raising highways in the Rockies... two miles of curvy asphalt, clinging nervously to the snowy mountains, with sheer drop-offs and traffic from logging trucks loaded with raw timber.
The challenge: Make the road less treacherous.
Smith Engineering's Transportation team went to work for N.M. Department of Transportation (NMDOT) creating a design that widened the road, added guardrails and safety shoulders and allowed for snow removal. Using our engineering design, motorists in south-central New Mexico now have a less "entertaining" road, but it meets national standards set by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and it's imminently safer for travel.
Another prime example includes a corridor study for transportation access in Archuleta County near Pagosa Springs in southern Colorado and NM 532 between the Village of Ruidoso and Ski Apache ski area. Our team of engineers and sub-consultants showed how the road could be modified to allow for safer travel, so vital to skiers in the winter.
Transportation engineering plays a significant role in developing individual neighborhoods and in connecting communities. Whether on your way to work, jogging in the park or making a trip across the state, transportation engineering, aware of it or not, impacts your daily routine. At Smith Engineering we understand the vital role transportation plays in commerce, community development and even lifestyle. We strive to understand the needs each design will meet - beyond the obvious. Communication is key to a successful project and Smith has a long history of positive public involvement on our transportation projects. The public's input is invaluable and the buy-in of the community helps ensure the process runs smoothly. Our projects successfully serve the surrounding communities for years to come.
From steep drop-offs in the Rockies to the traffic roundabout in Artesia, we make travel safer. You can see some of Smith's recent transportation projects in our portfolio.
