Flood Control and Drainage Engineering
Fulfilling our mission "Solutions for Today...Vision for Tomorrow," embraces two key elements with regard to Drainage and Flood Control Design Services: understanding our clients' needs and being experts in the field.
The Smith Engineering Drainage group is recognized throughout the state for our design of many drainage management and flood control projects.

Many communities throughout New Mexico have experienced significant floods that leave behind widespread and expensive damage to agricultural land and rural/urban areas. Smith Engineering assists in flood control to prevent and limit the impact of such floods, saving communities time, effort, and expense. Smith also assists with the removal of FEMA designated floodplains. Our floodplain analyses have resulted in miles of floodplain removal or floodplain revisions. Through floodplain removal projects, Smith has enabled many people to eliminate or greatly reduce costly flood insurance.
Smith Engineering's Drainage team has conducted numerous drainage analyses, design and floodplain projects for a variety of clients including the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority (AMAFCA), the City of Albuquerque (COA), the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) as well as other agencies and communities. We have assisted in the design and construction of many storm water detention dams, reinforced concrete channels, storm sewers, storm water quality structures and drainage management plans. After completion of one such project, an Industrial Park Drainage Management Plan, Rio Rancho City Engineer Randall Carroll commented, "It's rare to see analysis this comprehensive." That is the standard we constantly hold ourselves to here at Smith.
Prime examples of our work include the Campus Wash Drainage Basin in Albuquerque where we removed about 2000 properties from the FEMA floodplain or the Menaul Detention Basin in Albuquerque; the first large detention dam design in Albuquerque that provided storm water quality improvement features combined with flood control.
