Smith Engineering professionals helped boost the safety and convenience of New Mexico 132 in Cloudcroft.

Not so long ago, New Mexico highway 130 near Cloudcroft was one of the most hair-raising highways in the Rockies … two miles of curvy asphalt, clinging nervously to the snowy mountains, with sheer drop-offs and traffic from logging trucks loaded with raw timber.

The challenge: Make the road less treacherous.

SEC’s transportation team went to work for N.M. Department of Transportation (NMDoT), creating a design that widened the road, added guard rails and safety shoulders and allowed for snow removal. Using our engineering design, motorists in south-central New Mexico now have a less “entertaining” road, but it meets national standards set by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and it’s imminently safer for travel.

Our transportation engineers, known for attention to detail and client support, have broad experience in designing roadway projects ranging from regional airports to city streets and county bridges.

Our engineers provide conceptual alignment and drainage reports, surveying, right-of-way mapping, soil analysis, planning, environmental investigations and final improvement plans.

Specific design services include major streetscape and landscape improvements, parking, lighting, traffic and erosion control and intersections.

Other prime examples include a corridor study for transportation access in Archuleta County near Pagosa Springs in southern Colorado and NM 532 between the Village of Ruidoso and Ski Apache ski area. Our team of engineers and subconsultants showed how the road could be modified to allow for safer travel, so vital to skiers in the winter.
